A Veteran's Review of Seed Saga
A Veteran's Review of Seed Saga
With the release of Seed Saga just nine days away, I figured I would give my official review of Seed Saga as whole, mainly because I know how much the Spoils community values my opinion. :)
Ok, but seriously, let’s talk about Seed Saga.
This set is like Christmas! When Seed Saga was announced I have to admit, I was a bit bummed that the set was going to be mostly reprints. For players like myself who already have playsets of Seed 1, 2 and 3 as well as an abundance of extra rares and foils from that set, it wasn’t initially as exciting. But let me assure you, once you start cracking packs, you will forget about your old Seed cards and want these new fresh versions!
The set itself is 350 cards including 41 new cards as well as new art on about 49 popular cards. The 41 new cards are all either common or uncommon and a lot of them feel like they should be “rare.” The new artwork on some of the classics such as Adriel, Dragon Archer, Wanton Wizard, A Blazing Zero and Mysterious Invasion are top notch. There is also a 14th card in each pack.
Oh, the 14th card. Let me tell you about the 14th card. This extra card is SO much more than just an extra card in each pack. Your list of awesome things to pull are a Foil Seed 3 card (30 different cards), a faction card (8 Different, 2 of which are new), a full art Micromajig Token, or one of 10 different Full Art Ultra Rares! The full art ultra rares and the micromajig token are some of the coolest looking Spoils cards ever made, Witty Worm being my personal favorite out of the bunch.
As for the breakdown in packs, you will get 7 commons, 4 uncommons and 2 rares per pack. So besides the 14th card, you will get an extra uncommon and rare per pack all for the same price of $3.99 per pack. There is a lot of value in this set on top of a ton of great new cards and new artwork. The displays are also double in size with 24 packs per box.
You also have the chance to pull foil versions of every Seed card in the main set including Seed 2 cards that have never been foil before. If you guys were around when Seed 1 came out originally, the card stock was not high quality and the foils from that set seem to chip around the edges. Now you can get these cards foiled that look a lot better!
If I could now take a second to look at just the 40 new cards. I have to say once again that the R&D team did an amazing job creating a chunk of new cards that we can all have fun adding to our pre-existing decks as well as making new decks around certain cards.
This set is also fantastic to draft with. I had such a blast playing limited formats with Seed Saga, especially draft. Wait until you open a pack and read Goutflame Talonclaw, then base your entire sealed pool on a 8 cost, 5 threshold character. He is such a monster.
Overall I give Seed Saga my seal of approval with the only downside being that the new cards are a bit harder to obtain than I would like. But the chances of getting a “God” box makes up for it. By “God” box, I mean a “Zigalburgonglgr” Box or “Ziggy” for short. And what I mean by a “Ziggy” box is you can pull multiple Ultra Rares in a box — I have seen someone pull up to 10. So, pass this article on to your friends and then immediately go wherever you need to go and pre-order some Seed Saga boxes and get ready to have some fun opening pack after pack of one of the best sets ever to hit shelves. August 22nd can not get here soon enough!
P.S. I would like to give a shout out to everyone involved in running Gen Con, demoing, judging, etc. You guys put a lot of effort and time in and I want to make sure you guys know you are appreciated! It was good seeing you guys again and meeting a bunch of you for the first time, Especially Michael, who I have been talking to since day 1 and as expected, he is such a nice and amazing guy. Great meeting all of you!
